So-called dollar stores (where everything isn’t actually a dollar) are increasing in popularity, as if you’re a savvy shopper, you can snag tons of deals on items that would be far more expensive at your traditional grocery store.

Statistics show that the biggest chains – Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Family Dollar – added nearly 1,000 stores in a 12-month period, and there are now over 31,000 such stores in the United States.

While these stores are adding grocery items to their inventory, it’s important to note that the quality of these items will not always be as consistent as they are with name brands.

With that in mind, Hammonton Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing would like to share four tips to get the most out of your dollar store shopping experience

  • Don’t Be Afraid of Store Brands

Dollar store brands that you haven’t heard of are generally the same when it comes to things like cleaning supplies, garbage bags, greeting cards, gift wrap, etc. One shopper noted that liquid Downy was 10 cents per ounce at the grocery store, while a dollar store brand was less than 2 cents an ounce.

  • Check for Coupons

In addition to manufacturer coupons, many of the larger dollar stores offer coupons on their website that you can print out and bring to the store. With already low prices, you can get even more bang for your buck with these coupons.

  • Buy in Bulk Online

The three major dollar store retailers we mentioned all offer bulk deals on their website, so you can shop and save without having to leave the comfort of your home.

  • Know Which Items to Avoid

There are some things you shouldn’t sacrifice quality for savings. Some electric items have been known to have fake UL labels, meaning that they may not have been tested for safety. There have also been concerns about medication, along with obsolete or expired goods. Use good judgment and always check labels.
